Welcome to St. Francis Xavier School's Website
Next week the Parish and School will be hosting a once in a lifetime event. The relic of our own beloved patron saint St. Francis Xavier will be on display in the church next Wednesday, January 24th. It is expected that visitors coming to venerate the relic may number in the thousands.
I am very grateful that the Parish and the organizers of this tour have agreed to hold a special mass on Wednesday morning at 9:00 am. Arrangements have been made to allow the school students to be seated in the church before any other visitors will be allowed into the church. Mass will be lead by our Grade Seven students which again is quite an honour.
Parents need to be aware of the nature of the relic. As described in the media, the relic is a section of the right arm of St. Francis Xavier, whose body is on display in the Basilica of Born Jesus in Goa. Some students may be troubled by the relic and I might suggest parents discuss with their children whether or not closer viewing is a good idea.
There will be a chance for students to venerate the relic after mass is over. There is no requirement for students to venerate up close to the relic but if they decide to approach the relic that is a decision you make as a family. If you have any concerns, please contact your child’s teacher.
Just to be clear, the relic will be on display throughout the Mass. Teachers will of course teach the children about the relic. It may be visible when the children go for Holy Communion or for a blessing from Father Ly or one of the Eucharistic ministers.
As mentioned before, organizers expect visitors to be in the thousands. Traffic, which is horrendous at the best of times, will be very congested all day. Wednesdays, as you know, are 2:30 pm dismissal times anyway, but working in conjunction with Sister Mary and the Parish, it has been decided to cancel After School Chinese classes. Also, we have cancelled “Mad Science” classes as well. We have been in contact with Mad Science and they have agreed to add an extra class at the end of the scheduled classes to make up for it. Please make sure your child is picked up before 3:00 pm as the staff will be leaving at 3:00 pm at the latest to make room for the extra cars we are expecting.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation in helping to make this special event meaningful for the whole community. I am including some information I have gathered about the Relic and the tour.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Mr. Brian Fader, Principal
Thank you again for your cooperation during the mass confusion on Tuesday. I appreciate the fact many people had to scramble to find care for their children due to the school closure but given the information I had been given, there was no other choice to make.
Yesterday I received a phone call from Norm Dillon from the Waterworks division of the City of Vancouver and he apologized to me and to the parent community for the poor communication from the city workers on Tuesday. He told me the workers should have been more helpful and more cooperative with the school beyond the fact they were going to turn off the water on Wednesday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Mr. Dillon apologized for the lack of information we were given and for the way it was delivered, not to mention the lack of proper notice.
I know yesterday was a major imposition for all of you but I wanted to express my gratitude for the way the SFX School community understood the nature of the situation we faced. If you have any questions or concerns, please email me as today I am at a Principals’ Meeting all day.
Thank you again.
Brian Fader, Principal
Around 11:15 this morning someone from the City of Vancouver Waterworks department to inform us that they need to shut off the water to the school from 8:30 am and 12:30 pm tomorrow.
As you can imagine, we cannot have 440+ students in a building with no water for practical and safety safety reasons. I have discussed this with the PEC and the Building Manager and they agree the best option is to close the school for tomorrow only.
The Office Ladies have asked me to tell you that Calhoun’s Hot Lunch has been cancelled for tomorrow. All families who ordered food for tomorrow will receive a credit on their account. Thursday is the PTA Hot Lunch so parents are reminded there is no Calhoun’s on Thursday either.
I know this situation will cause inconvenience for many families in our community but there is truly no other safe options for the students and staff of our school.
Thank you for your patience and understanding!
