Artist Study – Zoomed In….

Today we were inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe.

Today we were inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe and how she looked at flowers as it through a magnifying glass. The students were asked to have some petals cut off as if they were going off the page. I am so impressed. Some doubt their work so if your able please come and see and pass along a compliment to your child about their poppy.

“When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower.”

November Newsletter from 4C & 4L

November 2016 News from Grade 4

Dear Parents,

We hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying the crisp fall weather. It is hard to believe how quickly September and October have flown by. The grade 4 students continue to adjust well to the expectations set for intermediate students. They know what is expected of them for the morning routines, instructional time and how to take care of their personal and school belongings. Please continue to sign your child’s agenda. The students are responsible for ensuring that they write down the unfinished class work and the homework that is listed on the homework board at the end of the day.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Dr. Seuss

Language Arts: Author in Residence, Glen Huser

Glen Huser, Canadian author and Governor Award winner, will be coming to Saint Francis Xavier to work with the Grade 4 students. He will be in the school in November. He will be working with the students for 6 “writing” and “creating stories” sessions. This is going to be a unique and exciting experience for the students.

We continue to work on the students’ writing skills focusing on brainstorming, making predictions and connections. The students are also focusing on adding more details to their sentences and using descriptive language (what we also refer to as “triple scoop” words). Students are encouraged to expand their love of literacy by reading informational texts, poetry or try a novel by a different author.

Some reading suggestions for grade 4 include:

Armstrong, William H. Sounder

Atwater, Richard and Florence. Mr. Popper’s Penguins

Cleary, Beverly. Romona the Brave

Creech, Sharon . Love that Dog

Ellis, Deborah. Mud City

Kogawa, Joy. Naomi’s Road

O’Dell, Scott. Island of the Blue Dolphin

Pearson, Kit. A Handful of Time

Naylor, Phyllis Reynolds. Shiloh and Shiloh Season

Sachar, Louis. Holes

Smith, Robert Kimmel. Chocolate Fever

White, E. B. Charlotte’s Web

Willis, Jeanne. Dumb Creatures

We love numbers! Yes, we do!

How do you write 9,356? What is expanded form? Our math geniuses have been busily working with whole numbers. They know how to write numbers in standard form, expanded form and are working on rounding numbers to the nearest10, 100 and 1000. We will also be working on comparing and ordering numbers. Students are practicing their skills using their Jump Math work books. We want all of our students to know that working with numbers is fun.

Upcoming dates to add to you calendars:

November 10, Remembrance Day Service November 11 Remembrance Day Holiday (no school)
November 14 (no school)

Message to Parents

As the first term comes to a close, students will be finishing topics such as weather and mapping skills. Encourage your child to complete assignments and homework on time, study hard and to prepare for upcoming quizzes and tests. We send a “big” thank you to all of the parents who continue to volunteer their time to help in the classroom. We really appreciate your help.

Blessings,

Ms. S.Chong and Ms. S. LeRose

November Newsletter

November 2016 News from 4L

Dear Parents,

We hope that this newsletter finds you all well and enjoying all the rainy days this Fall. As we head into November, we have observed that the Grade 4 students are adjusting well to the expectations for the intermediate students. We have worked on morning and end of day routines with them, what active listening looks like and how to be prepared for each of their classes with the correct materials. We have also expressed the importance of keeping their personal belongings neat and organized.

In 4L we have begun daily guided meditation.  This time allows for students to understand and control their breathing and bodies.  Some changes can already be seen, however we are still working on making connections between controlling our body in meditation to class time. Please ask them to show you what they have learned about breathing and being in the ‘green’ zone.

In language arts we are working on our story writing and reading skills. We have talked about “What good readers and writers do”. When we write our stories we focus on 2 goals:

  1. Make sure my writing is INTERESTING for my reader!
    1. dazzling details
    2. triple scoop words
    3. similes
    4. use your senses
    5. HOOK your reader
    6. That’s a Wrap!
    7. text features!
  2. Make sure my writing is CLEAR for my reader!
    1. spacing
    2. spelling
    3. punctuation
    4. organization
    5. stay on topic
    6. neat printing

We have started a writing plan that consists of Plan, Draft, Revise as well as Brain Pocket Writing, and Smokin’ Pencils.

We are continuing to read a class novel, ‘Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library”.

In Social Studies we have been working on mapping.

In Science we are concluding a unit on weather and will be creating weather instruments to test outside.

In Religion we are concluding a Saints Project and the students will be presenting to the class next week.

In Art we are continuing an Artist study, so far we have learned about Edgar Degas and Michelangelo. Next week will be Georgia Okeefe.

In Math we have concluded 2 unit tests and have a 3rd next week on money and some multiplication. Next unit will be on geometry.

If you have any questions about what we are working on please don’t hesitate to come and see me or send me an e-mail.

A few important dates to add to your calendars:

November 3,8, 15*,17, and December 1 are the Writer’s Workshop dates
**it said 14 on your permission form, however there is no school so it will be on the 15

We ask that you please check your child’s agenda and initial it each school night. This will help your child’s organizational skills and will promote good communication between the home and the school. Also, please feel free to leave a note for me of anything I need to be aware of.

Thank you for your co-operation and participation in your child’s learning.

Sincerely,

Ms. S. LeRose

We had our first day of our writer’s workshop and it went great! The students created a character and a wish for that character.  They also thought of 2 problems that occurred until finally the wish came true.

Our next day is Tuesday November 8- Just a reminder it starts at 12:15 so we eat lunch between 11:45 and 12:10 so please have the students lunches in class by then. Hot lunch comes right at 11:45 so it works out perfect.
