HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Grade 4 January 2017 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

We hope you had a wonderful, blessed and relaxing Christmas break with your loved ones. Happy New Year to all of you! We hope that 2017 brings you much joy, peace, love, good health and exciting adventures. We are now into term two and the Grade 4’s are eager to begin working hard.

1. Author in Residence Program:

We are so very proud of our students and the amazing stories that they wrote during Author in Residence Program with Mr. Glen Huser. The students were able to use their creative voices to develop their very own “masterpieces”. We would like to thank all of the parents who came out to our “Celebration of the Written Word” to listen to the stories that the children shared.

2. Social Studies:

This term we will be studying the lives of the First Nations Peoples. We will be using the information from our social studies text books together with information obtained from a hands-on workshops and fieldtrips. However, students are encouraged to borrow informational texts about the First Nations. These will help them find additional facts and practise using the elements found in an informational text. These elements include: index, glossary, pictures with captions, photographs, maps, bolded words, factual information, headings and table of contents. These are important skills for the students to know how to read an informational text and how to locate specific information. The main branches of any library (e.g. Vancouver, Burnaby, Coquitlam or Richmond) will have a good selection of books. Looking up resources online is another way to obtain quick and useful information. During computer class we will be learning and appropriate research methods.

3. Science:

In science we will be learning about animal habitats and biomes. The students will be learning the terms such as herbivore, carnivore and omnivore. They will also be able to construct and explain a simple habitat and food chain and understand how animals adapt to their environment to survive. We will begin this process by having a High Touch- High Tech workshop called “Adaptation Station.”

4. F. S. A.( Foundation Skills Assessment):

FSA assessment will be administered during the month of February. School attendance is important during this month. If your child is absent or misses an assessment he or she will complete the assessment on the first day back to school unless that day is beyond the deadline for completion of the assessments. The students will be guided in learning how to complete these reading, writing and numeracy assessments, some of which are to be completed on-line via the internet. They will also receive practice with mock FSA assessments.

Thank you for your co-operation and support in your child’s learning.

Sincerely,

Ms. S. Chong

Ms. S. LeRose
